The importance of International Certification in Water and Preventive Maintenance

The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) offers a variety of certification programs for coffee professionals, from baristas to roasters. In 2023, the SCA launched a new international certification in Water and Preventive Maintenance. This certification is essential for anyone who wants to work in the coffee industry, as water and preventive maintenance are two key factors in preparing quality coffee.

Water

Water is the most important ingredient in coffee. Water quality affects the flavor, body and texture of the drink. Water that is too hard can make coffee taste salty or bitter, while water that is too soft can make coffee taste watery or weak.

Water and preventative maintenance technicians learn to analyze water quality and take steps to improve it. They also learn how to operate and maintain coffee preparation equipment, such as coffee makers and espresso machines.

Preventive maintenance

Preventive maintenance is an important way to ensure that coffee brewing equipment is working properly and producing quality coffee. Water and preventative maintenance technicians learn to identify and fix potential equipment problems.
