Africa: The Coffee-Growing Cradle
Africa, the birthplace of coffee, boasts warm climates, fertile soil, and unique microclimates that produce beans with exceptional flavors.
In the 1930s, the British established the Scott Agricultural Laboratories, now known as the National Agricultural Laboratories, in Kabete. Their mission was to identify high-yielding coffee varieties resistant to diseases and droughts while maintaining exceptional cup quality.
To honor the laboratory, each new plant was prefixed with "SL" followed by a number. In 1931, a single tree from the Tanganyika group, designated SL28, was selected. Proven to be drought-resistant, it was propagated throughout Kenya, Africa, and eventually Latin America.
SL28, a distant relative of the Bourbon lineage, is considered one of Africa's finest coffee varieties. It is highly productive and can live for over 100 years.
Diego Baraona, a forward-thinking Salvadoran producer, recognized the potential of this variety and planted it on his Finca Los Pirineos estate in Usulután.
Its unique and delicious flavor profile, characterized by notes of blackcurrants and spices, is both exotic and captivating, with a sweet, enveloping, and intense aroma in the cup.
